  • The Museum of Military History in Kissimmee will host an Armed Forces Day celebration on Saturday, May 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event features a Quilts of Valor ceremony and a Korean War Veterans Dinner at 5:30 p.m.—tickets are required.  Positively Osceola

  • Osceola County School for the Arts Jazz Band A finished third at the 30th Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition held Sunday afternoon at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Central Florida received heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours — Lake Wales got over six inches and Kissimmee gathered more than three inches, which may have caused minor flooding on Monday. The forecast shows more showers and the chance for strong storms this afternoon, so residents should be cautious.  WESH
  • Strong storms will hit Central Florida this afternoon with heavy rain and the risk of an isolated tornado if any storms intensify — officials have called for impact weather until 5 p.m. and expect skies to clear later this evening.  WESH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Kissimmee officials asked hotel developers to rework and resubmit downtown proposals within 30 days after reviewing plans for the Civic Center and Toho Square—city leaders want projects with 120 to 300 rooms, more local jobs, and added retail spaces to meet neighborhood needs. The commission set aside $10 million to renovate the Civic Center while also planning a new hotel near the airport.  Around Osceola

  • AdventHealth will offer free sports physicals for Osceola County students in middle or high school this Sunday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Osceola Heritage Park—student-athletes, ROTC, band members and firefighting academy participants are eligible—and organizers will share registration details soon.  WESH
