- ➤ Osceola County Commissioner Peggy Choudhry will host a glow-in-the-dark anti-bullying event at Celebration High School on November 8 from 5-10 p.m. to give Osceola students free activities (chalk drawing, social media raffles, and chances to win laptops and other electronics) as part of ongoing efforts to stop bullying online and in schools. - ➤ On Aug. 19, Celebration High students attended Life Launch, an educational series by the Celebration Foundation in partnership with Moneywise America that taught financial literacy through interactive sessions and group exercises—featuring keynote speaker Julie Carrier and real-life budgeting scenarios. - ➤ Tropical Storm Melissa is currently sustaining winds near 50 mph and is expected to strengthen into a Category one storm by Saturday then reach Category three by Monday morning as it moves slowly over the Caribbean; hurricane watches for southwestern Haiti and Jamaica and a Tropical Storm Warning for Jamaica remain in effect while a cold front keeps central Florida cooler and dry today. - ➤ Osceola County officials are boosting patrols and sharing reminders during National School Bus Safety Week—bus drivers counted 500 instances of illegal passing in one day. Local law enforcement and school officials have worked together since Oct. 6 and issued over 60 citations to keep students safe. Spectrum News 13
- ➤ The Osceola County School Board outlined its funding priorities for the upcoming legislative session, and Superintendent Dr. Mark Shanoff stressed the need for a 24/7 security operations center to keep school campuses safe—this center will cost $750,000 and add a third shift with updated surveillance and communication equipment.
