- ➤ The city of Kissimmee is hosting Dinner With a Veteran on Nov. 8 from 5-7 p.m. at Chambers Park Community Center — the free event will honor veterans and offer a chance to connect. Registration is open for Youth Basketball Recreational Leagues at Denn John Middle School with Tuesday and Thursday practices and Saturday games from October through March, and the city is also offering a free Sweet Sixteens program at Chambers Park Community Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays to help teens build leadership skills. - ➤ Local businesses in Kissimmee have launched a neighborhood watch style safety coalition to share information with law enforcement and emergency management, protecting employees, visitors and the tourism industry. Jim Nickels from Calypso Cay Way Holiday Inn Express said the group is calling for more participation—members can join via WhatsApp and expect Osceola County Sheriff Chris Blackmon to speak at an upcoming meeting. - ➤ Eight friends led by Ruzaidi Villafane began a weekly salsa social at 3 Sisters Speakeasy in Kissimmee in August 2021, drawing on cherished childhood memories of dancing with her grandmother. - ➤ Students from Osceola School District met at Neptune Middle School last week for Rep. Paula Stark’s fourth Build-A-Bill competition where they presented legislative bills. The winning team of Carly Lech, Lucy Graham and Elysmar Francois earned top marks for their bill—Student Mental Health Act—which would require free breaks between classes and will be filed for the 2026 session. - ➤ FDOT is asking for public input on planned fixes to Orange Blossom Trail from Mary Louis Lane near the old Tupperware spot down to Old Dixie Highway—its work includes repaving lanes and updating traffic signals. An in-person open house will be held on Oct. 16 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Hart Memorial Library in downtown Kissimmee—attendees may also join an online webinar to submit comments by Oct. 27.
