CULTURE NEWS

  • Kaye Whaley was named the 2025-26 Big Boss of the Silver Spurs Club, a volunteer organization with family roots dating back to 1941 in Kissimmee. She is preparing for Saturday, October 4’s Boots, Bulls and Barrels rodeo at Silver Spurs Arena, where cowboys and cowgirls will compete in barrel racing, saddle bronc riding & bull riding using bulls and broncs raised at the club’s ranch in Kenansville.  Spectrum News 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, as the government shutdown continues, Second Harvest Food Bank braces for more local need after losing 11 truckloads of food from federal cuts—officials say more furloughed workers and families may soon require food help. The food bank, which serves seven counties and provides nearly 300,000 meals a day, has set plans to support those affected.  Spectrum News 13
  • On Oct 1, downtown Kissimmee businesses that sell alcohol from 12 a.m. to 2 a.m. needed a new permit costing $250 a year to cut noise complaints and allow KPD to enforce rules—Mayor Jackie Espinosa said the measure supports safe growth—while restaurants must serve meals to qualify.  Spectrum News 13
  • Toho Water Authority raised water, wastewater and irrigation rates by 7.5% on Wednesday and will apply a 4% increase each Oct. 1 through FY 2030 — reclaimed water rates are set to climb from 75% to 90% of irrigation rates by Oct. 2027 as the service area grows.  ClickOrlando
