ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • TD 9 is moving away from Cuba and is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane later today and into Tuesday—bringing gusty winds, heavy rain along the coast, and rough surf later in the week. Inland areas are expected to see breezy winds with 1 to 3 inches of rain while coastal spots might experience tropical storm force gusts.  WESH
  • Tropical Storm Imelda is forming and may bring tropical storm conditions to the Florida coast—officials urge residents to prepare emergency hurricane kits and follow local advisories as warmer ocean temperatures and low wind shear could add hazards. Local meteorologists note that added impacts are expected this hurricane season and advise people to stay alert for further updates.  WESH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • St. Cloud Fire Rescue received a $9.5 million SAFER grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and will hire 48 additional firefighters to improve emergency response along Clay Whaley Road, Kissimmee Park Road and in Tohoqua—the largest grant of its kind in the city. City funding of $37.6 million and state support will help build new stations and upgrade equipment to serve the growing community.  Around Osceola

  • On Saturday, more than 100 area riders competed in barrel racing at Silver Spurs Arena to practice for next Saturday's Boots, Bulls and Barrels event. The contest highlighted Osceola County's ranching heritage and featured participants ranging in age from five to 80.  Positively Osceola
